Chaplete by Erica Dawn Lyle
p. 7 on talking to a reporter.
“…I tell her, Transgender has for me become a kind of spirituality. It is about faith, and it is about a process of becoming. Even as a fearful society frantically tries to render our very existence impossible, we continue to embody The Impossible. Being transgender has shown me the miracle of what kind of profound change is actually possible and has shown me the heretofore unknown capacities for growth, change, and transformation that I had carried deep inside myself all along. I tell her, Being trans has given me a deep faith in myself but also in the possibility of change on larger scale, for mass transformation at a time when our paradigms of Western thought and society have revealed themselves to be bankrupt and at their fruitless conclusion, at a time when transformation is indeed required of all of us if we hope for life on Earth to continue. She listens patiently without comment. And then she asks me, But are you, like, afraid to go to the bathroom in public in Florida?”
